Applications must be prepared jointly by the faculty member and graduate student and approved by the graduate student’s thesis advisor. The application must be submitted to the relevant DGS, who, in turn, will submit his or her department’s AT applications to the program director, along with a brief letter of support. Departments may nominate as many courses as they choose.
Each application must include the following information in four sections. The selection committee will take these materials into careful consideration, including consideration of the degree to which it is evident that the AT and the faculty member contributed jointly to the application.
Recent proposals have generally been 5-8 pages long. Applicants are invited to review the AT Course Proposal Scoring Rubric.
Section 1: Information about the faculty member
- Department and title
- Years at Yale University
- Recent courses taught
- A brief statement explaining the reason for wanting to teach with this particular graduate student
- A brief statement describing a history of effective mentoring of teaching fellows (include course titles when listing course numbers, e.g., MCDB 300, “Biochemistry”)
Section 2: Information about the student
- Current year of study
- Brief statement of support from thesis advisor(s) for the student to teach as an Associate in Teaching.
- Will you be serving as an Associate in Teaching as part of your teaching requirement? (Yes/No)
- Teaching experience. Please include course titles when listing course numbers, e.g., MCDB 300, Biochemistry.
- A brief statement explaining the reason for wanting to teach as an Associate in Teaching.
- Evidence of effective teaching and commitment to teaching. This can include recent online course evaluations (no more than 2 sets) and letters of support.
Section 3: Information about the course
- Title, department(s), course number(s), and semester of the proposed course
- A description of the proposed course including format and structure (lecture, seminar, other), goals, learning objectives, plans for assessments, and desired enrollment. If the proposed course is an existing course, provide a preliminary description of how the course will be redesigned. If the proposed course is new, provide a brief description, including overall course rationale, scope, and audience.
- A rationale for why the course is particularly suited to be taught with an AT, with attention to the specific course design, delivery elements in which the AT will be involved and evidence of commitment to co-teaching
Section 4: A jointly developed statement of how the proposed experience as an AT will enhance the student’s development as a teacher and scholar.
Procedure for Submitting Applications for 2016-2017
- Applicants must forward their applications (Sections 1-4) to the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) of the sponsoring department by February 10, 2017. Fill out this form if you would like the CTL to remind the DGS responsible for the application to review and submit it.
- The graduate student’s thesis advisor must send a short email of support to the program director Suzanne Young. Variations on the following suggested text are acceptable, “As the thesis advisor for _____, I approve their application to co-teach an Associates in Teaching course during the next academic year.”
- The DGS will then submit the applications plus a ranked letter of support no later than February 17, 2017, via email, to the program director Suzanne Young.
- Subject heading “Associates in Teaching Application(s)”
- No paper applications will be accepted
- No applications will be accepted after the deadline
- A selection committee comprised of former AT faculty, Graduate School Deans, and Center for Teaching and Learning staff will review all applications and notify applicants by late March 2016.
