Intermediate and Advanced Teaching Workshops

Advanced and Intermediate Teaching Workshops are held throughout the year to help postdoctoral and teaching fellows gain the skills they need to make the transition to faculty positions.

Intermediate Teaching Workshops (ITWs) do not presuppose any previous engagement with the workshop topic, but draw on topics covered in the Fundamentals and/or the CIRTL MOOC.

Advanced Teaching Workshops (ATWs) fall into two categories:

  • Workshops that are part of our Academic Job Search Series, which are especially appropriate for participants preparing for the academic job market, and

  • Workshops that are designed as deeper dives into a given topic, which are especially appropriate for participants with prior experience. If you are new to the subject matter, you may be more comfortable starting with an Intermediate Teaching Workshop (especially “Identity in the Classroom”).

Participants can self-select into the workshops they feel most comfortable joining. ITWs and ATWs both count toward training requirements for the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP).

As part of the CCTP requirements, participants are required to take at least two Advanced Teaching Workshops. However, they can take as many as they wish.*

*Please note that the certificate requirements were revised in Fall 2022. If you began working toward your certificate before Fall 2022, any Advanced Teaching Workshops you completed count toward this requirement.

Participants in these workshops learn advanced skills in such areas as:

  • Leading discussions

  • Designing assignments

  • Instructional technology

  • Lesson planning

  • Lecturing

  • Giving feedback and grading

  • Design courses at a variety of levels

  • Diversity in the classroom

  • The role of the TF beyond academics

  • Writing letters of recommendation

Some workshops are offered as single programs and some as a series.

The Advanced Teaching Workshops also count toward the advanced pedagogy workshop requirement of the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP) program for graduate students. Please note that two-part ATWs count as two sessions toward the CCTP Requirement.
