Teaching & Learning Discussion: Teaching with Case Studies

Event Description

Case studies can be an incredibly useful teaching tool for stimulating robust conversation among students and providing insight into the type of scenarios that students may encounter in their future work. However, selecting case studies and preparing students to engage with the material can often be a complex process. How can we assess if we are reaching our learning goals effectively by using case studies? How do we account for bias in the case studies, our students, and ourselves? This lunchtime discussion will support instructors in thinking about how to teach case studies. Our conversation will begin with insights from Ken Scheve, the Dean Acheson Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs and the FAS Dean of Social Sciences; Song Ma, Associate Professor of Finance, and Jaan Elias, Director of Case Study Research. They will share their own thoughts and pedagogical practices and then invite others into the conversation. Participants are encouraged to come ready to contribute their own questions, challenges, and variations on practices related to community building. Lunch will be provided. We are committed to hosting inclusive and accessible events that allow all participants to fully engage… . .
