Yale Center for Teaching and Learning

Digital Accessibility Specialist

Description

The IT Information Services Consultant 2 – Digital Accessibility Specialist plays a key role in promoting equitable teaching practices and equitable access to Yale’s digital course materials and learning environments, serving as a primary point of contact for University instructors, administrators, educational content producers and service providers. With a shared appointment in Information Technology Services and the Teaching Development and Initiatives team at the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, the Specialist will consult with Yale instructors on accessible course design and the development of accessible digital materials and learning environments for both online and traditional courses. The Specialist will partner with external vendors, procurement officers and Yale service providers to increase the accessibility of resources that do not meet standards. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of digital accessibility practices, standards and remediation methods; hands-on experience with commonly used assistive technologies; a dedication to the principles of Universal Design for Learning and knowledge of best practices in the development of accessible courses for a diverse set of learners. While this position will not provide direct accommodation to students, we’re looking for someone who can advocate strongly for a learner-centered approach to the design of course activities and materials.

The individual in this role will: Advise instructors and support staff on the selection, creation and use of effective, equitable and accessible strategies and technologies for teaching and learning. Coordinate with Yale service providers in the Poorvu Center, Information Technology Services, the Broadcast Center, the Student Accessibility Services office and the University Library, among others, to increase the accessibility of resources for teaching and learning. Design and conduct training and outreach efforts to enhance awareness regarding accessibility of educational resources and universal design approaches. Stay abreast of emerging technologies, accessibility guidelines, relevant trends in higher education and pedagogy, and best practices and tools for accessible learning environments. Design and implement an effective and sustainable program for improving the accessibility of academic resources, with a particular focus on document accessibility (including use of Blackboard Ally) and media accessibility (captions, audio description). Work in person as needed, at least 3 days a week at the Poorvu Center and occasionally at ITS.

Preferred Skills: Excellent oral and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills. Ability to build consensus and devise training programs to elevate Yale’s commitment to accessibility. Working knowledge of digital design, development and remediation, including the WCAG 2.1 standard. Working knowledge of commonly used assistive technology, including screen readers (e.g., JAWS, VoiceOver), screen magnifiers, and voice control tools. Familiarity with federal and state laws pertaining to disability services.

This position is housed in Information Technology Services but shared with the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, whose mission to promote teaching and learning is rooted in a culture that prioritizes equity, accessibility, and the growth of each team member. We care for one another as professionals and human beings. We value the perspectives of individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, identities, and expertise. And we support one another in learning from our failures as much as our successes. Please include a cover letter and CV to apply for this position. The interview process for this position will involve three stages, including an initial Zoom interview, a mock syllabus “homework assignment,” and an in-person workshop and interview. Our hope would be for someone to start in this position around August 2023.
