College physics students’ epistemological self-reflection and its relationship to conceptual learning

Event Description

The STEM Education Journal Club provides the opportunity to discuss a relevant article in preparation for the upcoming seminar in the series. This journal club is facilitated by Claudia DeGrandi.

Selected Article: “College physics students’ epistemological self-reflection and its relationship to conceptual learning,” David B. May and Eugenia Etkina, Am. J. Phys. 70, 1249 (2002).

As Claudia writes, “The authors investigate the impact of prompting students to reflect on their learning through weekly reports. The study was done with freshman in an intro-physics class, but it will motivate a broader discussion on the importance of developing students’ self-reflection skills and meta-cognition in any discipline.” To be sent the article and included in the head count for dinner, please register for the journal club.

The STEM Education Seminar & Journal Club Series is sponsored by the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
